MS4 FAQ

What is an IDDE investigation?

Illicit Discharge Detection and Elimination (IDDE) is the process of identifying and resolving unauthorized discharges to the storm sewer system. SmartComply guides you through the full investigation workflow — from initial observation to resolution.

How do I log a new outfall?

Go to MS4 → Outfalls → + Add Outfall. Enter the outfall ID, type, receiving water body, coordinates, and pipe diameter. Outfalls are placed on the GIS map automatically.

What BMP types are supported?

SmartComply tracks structural BMPs (detention ponds, bioretention, permeable pavement, swales, etc.) and non-structural BMPs (public education, good housekeeping). Each type has its own inspection checklist.

How does annual MS4 reporting work?

The module aggregates data across all six MCMs (Minimum Control Measures) into a report template aligned with your permit. Navigate to Reports → MS4 to generate your annual report.

Can field staff log inspections on mobile?

Yes. SmartComply's responsive design and PWA support let field staff complete inspections, upload photos, and record GPS coordinates from any mobile device — even offline.

How do I track dry-weather screening results?

From an outfall record, click + Screen. Record field parameters (flow, odor, color, turbidity), collect sample data, and the system flags any indicators of illicit discharge.
